With so many different video game franchises coming and going at a rapid pace, it’s refreshing to see some characters from years past survive and advance into the annals of history. Sonic is one such example. Despite going through what many call ” The Dark Age of Sonic” the blue hedgehog has managed to come through with a second life, and the most recent endeavor, Sonic Frontiers, is the most recent example of that. This is made evident by the announcement by Sega that Sonic Frontiers, which launched this past November, has now sold more than three million copies worldwide.
In addition to this amazing feat, Sonic Frontiers was also the recipient of an award, the Future Category of the Japan Game Awards, which the title received at the end of the Japan Game Awards time frame. It also won the Action-Adventure category of the Famitsu Dengeki Game Awards, a special awards event held by long-time Japanese publication Famitsu. The game was seen by many as a return to the open-world aspects for the franchise, something that Sonic has dabbled with in the past with, let’s just say mixed results.
Sonic Frontiers seems to have done a bit better than some of its contemporaries, but not quite as well as one of the very first to venture into the open-world genre, Sonic Adventure. Still, Frontiers has dedicated fan base, one that is also slated to receive new content. The first piece of free DLC, Sights, Sound, and Speed, dropped just this week and includes a new challenge mode, a Jukebox, and Photo mode for players to interact with. Sonic Frontiers will also be getting a second content drop later that will celebrate Sonic’s actual birthday and a third piece that will introduce new characters and another playable story.
