The newest game from indie developer Heart Machine, the creators of Hyper Light Drifter, was announced yesterday via an IGN exclusive. The new launch trailer for Solar Ash Kingdom, which you can check out below, doesn’t show tremendous amounts of gameplay but does a fantastic job of setting up the strange and unique backdrop, complete with what appears to be a vibrant alien world and a superb soundtrack that captures the world as we see it perfectly.
The trailer shows a world inhabited by strange creatures, some seemingly more hostile than others (looking at you, giant eyeball monster). Dilapidated buildings and bridges have been retaken by nature, though parts of some appear to be just drifting in the air. A space station, or at least part of one, can be spotted out in the distance of space. A masked figure descends from the sky, skating through the environment, poised to launch an attack on the aforementioned giant eyeball monster. What we don’t know about the game far outweighs what we do at this point, but it seems like we’re in for a fast-paced game through a bizarre land with some pretty epic fights.
In addition to developer Heart Machine, Solar Ash Kingdom will boast the talents of publisher Annapurna Interactive, known for the acclaimed What Remains of Edith Finch. Alx Preston, the founder of Heart Machine, spoke to IGN about the upcoming game. “We strive to tell a beautiful story through our world, the atmosphere, our characters and even our gameplay – each aspect of our games are painstakingly considered.” He also spoke about both the excitement of their upcoming sophomore title and their move away from the pixelated graphics of Hyper Light Drifter.
While details of release date and platform availability have yet to be announced, Solar Ash Kingdom will definitely be available through the Epic Games Store, judging by the prominent logo featured at the end of the trailer. There is still no word on if the game will only be available through the Epic Games Store, but games such as Metro Exodus and Phoenix Point going Epic exclusive means it cannot be ruled out.
