It’s been 30 years since the iconic METAL SLUG launched in arcades on April 19, 1996. Garnering acclaim for its simple controls, frantic run-and-gun action, and vibrant pixel art, the franchise has seen success throughout the decades with numerous sequels and spin-offs. Now, in celebration of METAL SLUG’s 30th anniversary, SNK has announced its plans for the future of the franchise, with re-releasing the first game and having new games in development.
“To celebrate 30 years of Metal Slug action, we are going to revitalise and relaunch the series with a wide range of exciting projects, including new initiatives in the world of video games!” SNK said.
SNK has done a variety of different things to help commemorate METAL SLUG’s 30th anniversary. They released a special retrospective video showcasing METAL SLUG’s storied past and beloved present, and teasing what’s to come. There is also a special anniversary website and dedicated social media accounts to help celebrate. It doesn’t stop here. A slew of celebratory content is planned to roll out over the coming months.
On the official anniversary website, SNK wrote:
“METAL SLUG‘s detailed pixel art and charming, lighthearted visuals set it apart from the rest when iy hit arcades in 1996. Players have been spellbound by the game’s vibrant graphics ever since – whether it’s been comically expressive soldiers and their nuanced movements, or giant war machinces whose destruction shakes the entire screen. Coupled with its simple, intuitive controls and fast-paced gameplay, it’s little wonder this SNK classic garnered acclaim not just in the arcade but on home consoles as well. Even now, 30 years on, the METAL SLUG series continues to evolve. Still running, still gunning – with no end in sight. Strap in and stay tuned for what lies ahead on the horizon!”
