Sky: Children of the Light Spotlighted At E3 Before Its Mobile Launch Next Month

The developers that brought the beautiful and relaxing Flower and one of the most inspirational indie games of all time with Journey, Thatgamecompany revealed a couple of years ago that they were working on their new project. The new game, called Sky, was discussed and teased in bits in pieces. From the screenshots and interviews it appears as though the next title will have the artistic signature that Thatgamecompany is so well known for. Check out an interview with some rapid-fire answers with the President and Creative Director, Jenova Chen.

Now called Sky: Children of the Light, Thatgamecompany will be bringing a game where players will experience the ability to “Hold hands with your loved ones and soar above the clouds.” While the description of any kind of narrative has been brief up until now, we do know that players will be able to team up with others to return stars to their proper constellations while also discovering the mysteries of a forgotten kingdom. The compassion and discovery that the flying children exhibit look like they will be the themes that will carry Sky forward.

The most recent gameplay was shown off by Chen and Jennie Kong of Thatgamecompany at E3. The video below gives an extended look into the thinking and design behind the game. As a “spiritual sister” to Flower and Journey, Sky was “a game designed for you to play with the people you love” Chen says. Take a look at the walk-through from the showing:

The surprising thing that may strike potential players is that Sky: Children of the Light will be releasing first as a mobile game on the iPhone. Some may see mobile games as less developed than full-fledged console or PC titles, but Chen explains that it will also be later available on Android devices, macOS, tvOS, PC, and consoles. Sky: Children of the Light is Thatgamecompany’s first major game since Journey back in 2012 and is sure to bring out emotions when it launches this July.
