For every video game that simulates day to day life in order to make players feel like they are living in a real place, there are others that use the opportunity to place players in wholly unique and bizarre circumstances. Such in the case with upcoming Sintopia, which sees players managing the various affairs of Hell itself, with gameplay focused on punishing inhabitant rather than seeing to their needs. Recently the game received an announcement trailer, showing off the advancements that had been made since the last showcase.
The trailer presents itself as an onboarding video, getting players acquainted with the imps they will be looking after. The player is seen able to place buildings as they choose along the street, with each serving a purpose after being automated by an “imployee”. The trailer also features some lighthearted punishments that players are able to administer such as video lessons on right and wrong and exercise bikes, alongside some less friendly options like a pit into a monstrous set of jaws. Finally, the trailer shows off a feature designed for more chaotic players by allowing them to wreck destruction on the area whenever they please. The game also shows off some combat between soldiers and demons.
The Steam store page reveals the ultimate goal of the game, which will be to use the systems of punishment within the underworld to turn a profit. Players will also need to keep track of the real world and its inhabitants, because if too many start sinning they could reduce efficiency or summon demons in interrupt progress.
Many games focused on simulation are able to induce a sense of calm in players and cultivate a friendly environment. Combining this with death and punishment using a comedic lens produces a unique tone for Sintopia. Whether this premise is engaging will be up to players when the game releases on Steam on April 16th.
