Earlier today, the official Sid Meier’s Twitter account posted a tweet announcing that a new Civilization game is in the works. This Civilization game would be the seventh in the series that started all the way back in 1991, according to Ginx. It has been approximately six and a half years since the last Civilization game came out and fans have been excited to hear news coming for a new installment.
The Civilization team describes their game as a turn-based strategy game that has each player creating and molding their civilizations throughout different eras in history. Development of your nation can come in multiple forms, each of which provide separate paths to victory, allowing for a wide variety in the way the game can be played. These forms of winning include: Science, Culture, Domination, Religion, Score, and Diplomacy.
Civilization as a franchise has been very profitable for their head company Take-Two Interactive. According to their own statistics, as of 2021, Civilization as a franchise sold over 57 million units, almost equaling the same amount of units sold by the entire Red Dead Redemption franchise. Turtlebeach also notes that since 2016, Civilization VI alone has sold over 11 million units. Even today, the Civilization series continues to get consistent levels of play, seeing an average of around 45,000 monthly players on Civilization XI according to Steamcharts.
As far as the tweet itself is concerned, no details were officially announced with the tweet, aside from the Sid Meier’s team teasing the game’s development. They seem to be keeping many of the details under wraps for the time being, which is understandable for the first announcement of an upcoming game.
Additionally, it is fair to note the above Ginx article mentions that the wait has remained consistent with the other games in the franchise, as there has, on average, been a four to five year gap between the release of each game since the first one was released. While this one will take a bit longer than average, it is exciting to know that it is now officially on the horizon.
