Atlus’s newest IP Shin Megami Tensei V launched in November 2022 and was an immediate hit in the JRPG community. The title was critically acclaimed upon release, and has become one of the must-have titles for the Nintendo Switch. Now it looks like the full fruits of labor are starting to appear for Atlus as the company has just announced that after six months of being available, Shin Megami Tensei V has now sold 1 million units worldwide. This also makes it the best-selling Shin Megami Tensei title in franchise history, which is quite the accomplishment for a series that started in 1987.
Considering that the entry released as an exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, and it’s been out for under a year, this is a very impressive milestone. This is also magnificent as its popularity is generally much lower than the much more mainstream spin-off series Persona, which has become Atlus’s primary franchise. To celebrate this achievement, Character Designer Masayuki Doi drew a special illustration which was posted on the studio’s Twitter and can be seen above.
To emphasize the resurgence of the Shin Megami Tensei, these new numbers also trounce the previous holder for the best selling entry in the series, 2013’s Shin Megami Tensei IV which was released for the Nintendo 3DS. That title sold more than 600,000 copies worldwide, which at the time was considered a great achievement. Fast forward to 2022 and the long-awaited sequel has completely usurped the previous title by a mile. Hopefully, Atlus will bring out more mainline titles after seeing the massive success of this one.
Shin Megami Tensei V is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
