Shadows of Doubt, a first-person detective stealth game developed by Colepower Games and published by Fireshine Games, will be getting its console release next month. The game has been available on PC through early access since April 24, 2024, but will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox X|S series on September 26, 2024.
Shadows of Doubt isn’t a linear, story-driven game, taking place in a procedurally generated open-world city that players can denote the city’s size, name, and seed at the beginning of every new save file. The player is then given access to police transmissions and is able to hear when a murder has been reported, allowing them to open a new case. From there players must put their detective skills to the test in order to solve each new mystery. The goal of each game is to amass enough social credit score through solving murders to be able to retire.
The game’s hyper-industrial aesthetic – born out of veritable butterfly effect that greatly shifted history but led to a slightly more dystopian style United States called the United Atlantic States – helps drive home the goals of the player’s character: to escape the city to a better life in the distant “Fields” by paying their dues.
Early reviews for the game tend to praise the game’s open-ended, player-driven style, while finding fault in repetitive gameplay and bugs. Luckily with the upcoming console release and already being over a year from the initial release, bugs might be a thing of the past. Despite these criticisms, the game has a very positive 9/10 rating on Steam, with the majority of recent reviews also being very positive. Overall the game seems to have found a dedicated fanbase, and with the jump to consoles and physical release happening next month that base might expand. Shadows of Doubt is currently available on Steam.
