On July 14, Owlcat Games posted a journey trailer for Shadow of the Road, a turn-based RPG set in a reimagined 1868 Japan that blends the final days of the Tokugawa Shōgunate with steampunk machinery. It is a unique blend of tradition, magic, and technology, where players must test their skill against yōkai and mechanical contraptions.
The developers of the game, Another Angle Games, has revamped their website to be the official website to the game. Here is what the website reveals about the turn-based combat. Players will act as master strategists, creating a team from a variety of characters. Each one has their own motives, skills, and abilities that will influence every encounter.
The journey trailer reveals a mix of environments ranging from lush fields to snowy biomes. There are foggy magical realms for players to travel through, highlighting the beauty of these fantastical environments. However, this game also features the grotesque through the corpse littered paths and monstrous enemies.
This recent trailer reveals a mix of the mechanical and supernatural enemies players will encounter. There is a sentient cart displaying the corpses of its last victims and a grotesque protruding eye. The spider infested caves are not the only place these creepy crawlies wander as the game also features an Arachne, a half-human half-spider, monster.
Another key feature of the game is the choices players make matters. Every choice will change the fate of the Empire as the world is currently in a struggle between the modern and traditional spheres. Players will be able to form bonds with other characters, sever lifelong ties, and repair fractured ones. Their choices will shape the narrative throughout their journey.
The game has come a long way since it’s announcement trailer 2 years ago. The dev team has been working hard since then, creating various areas and combat scenarios for players to look forward to. Shadow of the Road has no set release date yet, but there is a demo available on Steam for players to explore.
