Shadow of the Ninja, originally released in Japan as Yami no Shigotonin Kage (The Dark Operative: Kage) and later in Europe and Australia as Blue Shadow, is a side-scrolling action game developed by Natsume for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. The game follows two ninjas on a mission to assassinate a dictator in a futuristic New York City. Although a Game Boy port was planned, it was ultimately released under the name Ninja Gaiden Shadow.

The game transports fans to the year 2029, where Emperor Garuda has taken over the United States, establishing a stronghold in the nation’s largest city. To stop Garuda and avenge the innocent lives lost, players embark on a mission reminiscent of the 1981 movie Escape from New York. Shadow of the Ninja is a side-scrolling platform game that can be played by up to two players simultaneously, with one controlling a purple ninja and the other an orange ninja.

Despite its slower gameplay typical of older games, players can run, crouch, climb ladders, attack, jump, and hang from overhangs to move underneath them.If a player has more than half of their vitality, they can perform a special attack by holding a button for an extended period, summoning a thunderstorm that damages all on-screen enemies but reduces their vitality by half.

It will be nostalgic for some people, which is always a good thing as video games continue to grow, change, and be revived.
