Just today, the developers from the Overwatch 2 team announced a variety of new updates and upgrades that will be coming to the game in the next upcoming four seasons. Aaron Keller, the main director behind the scenes of Overwatch 2 and the face of the game, announced many of these new changes through Overwatch Spotlight, the live premiere. These new changes will be seen throughout the seasons, and Season 15: Honor and Glory, will be releasing on February 18th.
The Season 15 trailer showed up new things players can expect for the season such as competitive rank resets, new galactic weapons players can obtain through playing competitive, perks, loot boxes returning to the game, the new Zenyatta mythic skin and new battle pass skins players will see in the upcoming season, and also a collaboration with K-Pop group Le Sserafim.
Developer Alec Dawson goes more in depth about the new perk system players will be able to experiment with in Season 15. He talks about how players will level up their hero two times throughout a match. Players will be able to choose between two minor perks such as cooldown reductions and small passives. He describes the new hero perks as a “radical shift in how you experience gameplay.” In the premiere they showed off some of the minor and major perks for Orisa, Torbjörn, and Ana. For instance, Torbjörn will be able to stick his turrets on walls. Currently, some of the content creators for Overwatch 2 are showing the rest of the perks for each hero.
Gavin Winter introduced some new updates such as hero bans that will come in Season 16 and map voting that will be coming after hero bans. He talks about the return of loot boxes, which will be available in the free track of the battle pass as well as the weekly rewards where players can obtain them just by playing the game.
Kenny Hudson talks about the return of 6v6 gameplay which will be getting its own competitive queue, and it will be an open queue. They will also introduce the new mode Overwatch Classic: Goats. Players will be able to choose 3 supports and 3 tanks and battle one another and strategize with each other.
Jude Stacey announces and premieres two new heroes expected to come this year. She introduced Freja, a new damage dealing hero who wields a crossbow and a cape that gives her serious airtime. She has an ultimate that can drag enemies to a central point and deal damage on them. Jude subtly hints at another water-wielding hero named Aqua that will be talked about more later this year for Season 18.
Aaron Keller introduces Stadium, a new game mode that includes Mods, a new mechanic that will let players make upgrades to stats and abilities and create their own build for that character. Players will be one hero throughout a lengthy match that rapidly switches between different maps and modes. At the beginning of the match, players will be given access to an armory and players will be able to spend points to upgrade their hero’s abilities. There were many examples shown throughout the video such as Soldier 76 and Kiriko.
