At The Game Awards 2020, Nintendo announced the newest Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Fighter will be Sephiroth from the Final Fantasy series. Sephiroth first appeared in the original Final Fantasy VII (there has since been a Final Fantasy VII remake) in 1997 and was a fan-favorite villain. He will be available as a DLC fighter starting December 22 individually or in the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 – Challenger Pack 8.
This challenger pack also includes a new stage and nine new music tracks, including “One-Winged Angel” by Nobuo Uematsu, which is Sephiroth’s theme song. Super Smash Bros. already includes two music tracks from Final Fantasy. The new stage is based on the Northern Cave setting which is the final dungeon of Final Fantasy VII and is an iconic battle with Sephiroth in the game. Sephiroth’s Classic Mode journey in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have him face many bosses: for example, Ganon from The Legend of Zelda, Galleom from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Dracula from Castlevania.
For a limited time, you’ll be able to fight Sephiroth as a boss character in the #SephirothChallenge! If you defeat him, you’ll be able to use Sephiroth and the Northern Cave stage prior to their official release date!

Though the character launches on December 22, players can fight him earlier by participating in a special boss battle in the game. This is the Sephiroth Challenge which starts December 17 and players must pre-order the DLC to participate. If players complete the challenge on any difficulty (there is an easy, normal, and very hard difficulty option), the new stage and music will be released early as well.
Sephiroth can be purchased separately from the Fighters Pass for $5.99 or the complete Fighter Pass Vol. 2 for $29.99. The Sephiroth Challenge ends December 22 at 5 PM PT.
