Sega Announces Sonic Origins Plus for Sonic’s 30th Anniversary

Earlier today, Sega released a trailer, via twitter, for the upcoming expansion to Sonic Origins, aptly titled, Sonic Origins Plus. This expansion will come on June 23, to mark Sonic’s 30th anniversary with a plethora of returning games, new characters and new game modes to enjoy.

The original Sonic Origins was released in celebration of Sonic’s 29th anniversary last year. The base version of the game had Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. In addition to the collection of games, Sonic Origins also added new animations for various sections of the game, classic and anniversary modes and new unlockable missions, modes and a museum.

Sonic Origins Plus will be adding a plethora of new content to their game for fans to get excited about. According to NintendoLife, the downloadable content goes as follows: There will be 12 playable Game Gear Sonic games playable through Sonic Origins’ museum, Amy Rose will be a playable character in all mainline Sonic games and Knuckles will be a playable character in Sonic CD. These are the twelve Game Gear Games available through the expansion:

– Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

– Sonic Blast

– Sonic Chaos

– Sonic Drift

– Sonic Drift 2

– Sonic Labyrinth

– Sonic Spinball

– Sonic the Hedgehog

– Sonic the Hedgehog 2

– Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble

– Tails Adventure

– Tails’ Skypatrol

This time around, to mark the 30th anniversary of the game, Sega has also decided to add a few extra collectibles to incentivize players to buy their game. According to IGN, there are three ways to get the game. You can buy the game with the expansion pack built in for $39.99, as a physical or digital copy, or if you already have the base Sonic Origins, you can buy the expansion separately for $9.99. The only difference between the three versions are the accessories you get with the games. If you buy the expansion pass separately or just the digital version of the game, you just get the expansion pass content. However, if you buy the physical version of the game with the expansion pass, you get a twenty-page art book as well as a reversible cover sheet with new, never-before-seen art.

All of this will be available for purchase on June 23, 2023 as a part of the expansion, Sonic Origins Plus.

Alex Balderston: I am a news writer with a love of all things video games. My dad got me into video games at four years old with Backyard Baseball and since then I have been hooked. I have a sweet spot for Nintendo games, however I am always looking for the new games to spark my interest.
