Sea of Thieves Season 7 Makes Captains of Us All

After reaching a landmark 30 million players, the online multiplayer game Sea of Thieves is close to celebrating its seventh season, releasing on July 21st. With this new season comes a variety of changes and additions that are sure to make any player’s pirate fantasies come to life. Season 7 is more themed than any Sea of Thieves season in the past, as it places sole focus on the role of “Captain.” While there have not been roles in the past, the new season seeks to add some element of command, allowing players to captain their own vessels and customize them as such. At this past weekend’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, Sea of Thieves showed off a comedic, musical trailer that contains many details about this new season’s updates – in classic pirate singalong fashion.

The first of the long-desired changes is the customization now possible with one’s ship. In the past, ship customization could only be done element by element, painstakingly selecting each and every detail at one of the game’s Shipwright shops. Now, players can create different preset load-outs that allow them to change the ship’s overall look and armaments to fit any situation – on the fly. Further, players are now able to name their ship; pirate captains can emblazon an appropriate name of their choice on the hull and above the captain’s quarters, making the ship their own.

Heading inside the captain’s quarters, the cabin can now be customized for the first time in Sea of Thieves’ 4-year history. Players can choose from a variety of nautical and pirate-themed decorations, wall art, or souvenirs plundered in their days on the high sea. While turning that cabin into a home, players can also “chronicle a captain’s log.” Though there aren’t many details on this, many assume that the captain’s log will be a new progress tracker in the season to come.

One potential quality of life change that is still largely unknown regards the way that loot is sold in Sea of Thieves. Returning to port after a long voyage can mean equally-long assembly lines required to cart the crew’s spoils to the specific island marketplaces needed in order to make a profit. Now, in season 7, captains will be able to optimize this process through Cash-In Points and a new NPC merchant referred to as The Sovereign. Rather than selling loot to whichever corresponding merchant can accept it, The Sovereign will accept anything… provided you have enough Cash-In Points.

Finally, the trailer hints at customization across playstyles. Again, there aren’t many details on this new addition either, but it is likely that players will be given greater freedom to choose the multiplayer and PvE experiences they actually want. All in all, this season promises to bring a variety of changes that fans have been wanting for years, potentially providing enough incentive to bring back many players lost by a lack of content in seasons past.
