Sea of Thieves’ First Major DLC Is Arriving Next Week

Sea of Thieves developer Rare has announced that The Hungering Deep, first in a line of several DLC coming to the game, is arriving next week on May 29. There are six expansions in total currently expecting to release for Sea of Thieves in 2018; two more over the summer, and three following pieces of DLC towards the end of the year.

A new trailer introducing The Hungering Deep and a grizzled pirate named Merrick was released alongside the DLC news. In Rare’s announcement post, it prefaced the trailer by writing, “A new and not inconsiderable threat to seafarers will be joined by a raft of other additions, including a voyage of discovery upon which you’ll cross paths with Merrick himself.” In the trailer, Merrick’s tales of infamous and terrifying sea monsters (along with the title of the expansion) is definitely foreshadowing of what we’re likely to see upon the DLC’s launch. We can also see Rare promises “new challenges” for players, adding “Do the sailors on the Sea of Thieves face a new threat, or an ancient one? Hear the stories and steel yourselves…”

Rare has also stated that this update will bring a new event to the game, adding “a new AI threat to the world.” As part of the event, “crews will have to work together to discover and defeat this threat.” Additionally, Rare will be adding a few new mechanics “to assist players on this adventure” and unique rewards to be collected during the event.

Sea of Thieves‘ next expansions are Cursed Sails, which will be adding a new type of ship to the game, and Forsaken Shores, which introduces “a perilous new part of the world to explore.” Both of these will be arriving in just a few months during the summer, and similarly to The Hungering Deep, will bring new mechanics, AI threats, and rewards for players.

Sea of Thieves is available now for Xbox One and PC.
