Santa Monica Studios Announces Raising Kratos, a God of War Documentary

To celebrate the one year anniversary of the 2018 hit God of War, Santa Monica Studios has released the first trailer for Raising Kratos, which is available to view on PlayStation’s YouTube channel. According to Santa Monica’s Twitter post today, Raising Kratos will be a “full length feature documentary, coming soon to PlayStation YouTube.”

Writing for PlayStation.Blog today, Game Development Head of Worldwide Studios, America Scott Rhode shared some details on this documentary feature. More than a typical “making of” look behind the curtain at the technical aspects of game development, Rhode explains that Raising Kratos will tell a more human story of the “People” who worked on God of War and the personal experiences of the team that put so much time, effort, and faith into the project.

All creative endeavors, especially those of this magnitude, require an incredible amount of dedication and focus that constantly toe the fine line that separates both success and failure. The hope is that once people see the experience of Santa Monica Studio unfold on the screen, they will recognize the undying passion for their work and the incredible respect they have for their craft.

Rhode goes on to make special mention of the fans of God of War,  thanking them for the overwhelming support for the PlayStation 4 exclusive title.

2018’s God of War marks a major departure for the franchise, shifting many of the elements that fans of the series were accustomed to. Creative director Cory Barlog and his team proved their vision for a new kind of God of War, and a new kind of Kratos, was sound and right for 2018’s gaming market. The game released to incredibly positive reviews from critics and players alike and became one of the highest-selling PlayStation 4 titles to date.

The God of War reboot’s success inspired Vice President & Managing Director for the UK, IE & Australasia at Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe Warrick Light to make statement in an interview with MCVUK in support of a commitment to narrative-driven, single player experiences in the PlayStation’s future.

There’s still a huge audience for games that offer the best in single player narrative with stunning gameplay, as witnessed by the enormous popularity of both Spider-Man and God of War in this year’s charts. I was just at the Golden Joysticks – God of War won five!
The trailer reveal follows up on a number of other announcements to thank the fans of God of War during its anniversary, including a free dynamic theme and an avatar bundle. Santa Monica Studios has also announced an upcoming card game set to release in Q3 this year.
Angel Tuohy: I'm a fan of a lot of different games in different genres, and my favorites are Dark Souls, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Tekken, Persona, Resident Evil, and NieR. I think games are a brilliant way to tell a story, but it's important to me that the game is fun to play too. I've recently received my Master's degree in Literature.
