Bring up the wall of pictures and suspects, with pins and red string, it’s time to connect the dots in the unsettling and bizarre world of Rusty Lake. Developers Rusty Lake had announced their next project back in April with quick teaser trailer. That trailer made connections to one of the older one-shot Cube Escape games they had created, Cube Escape: Case 23. It revealed the possible return of an antlered character (who shows up consistently throughout the series), and not much else.
Since the initial tease, the Rusty Lake Twitter has been alive and well when it comes to just giving hints and teases. Such as a man waking up and brushing his teeth on repeat. Or watch speeding through time. It wasn’t until May 24, 2019 that fans got a little bit more of a peak, with a title, and some images. And the title being The White Door:
While the style looks as far from the grim and deep atmosphere of the Rusty Lake series, the developers have stated that this is still within the same universe of their main games. But other than that, there wasn’t anything else. So the teases still kept coming. Hints of trailers, showing off the different style, stating where they would be showing off the game at specific conventions. And finally, at long last, the first story teaser trailer has appeared:
Up, eat, practice, repeat. Up, eat, practice, repeat. Up, eat, practice, repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Dream. The mind and body of one Robert Hill is the same inside of the one place he has to consider home: the home of mental health facility. He suffers from memory loss and requires the help of decoding his dreams to figure out what happened to him. Other than that, this game is still a mystery, but there are some connections to make.
The first connection is the main character. Because of how in depth the lore is in the Rusty Lake series, this didn’t seem like a new character. And he isn’t. Robert Hill first showed up in the same game that the antlered man showed up in: Cube Escape: Case 23. And, for his character, a huge importance is a black cube. Both the black cube, and the antlered man had shown up in the original teaser trailer back in April. It has become more clear that whatever might be affecting The White Door, is connected with Cube Escape: Case 23 and whatever fell Robert Hill.
The White Door takes on a new mysterious adventure and new look for the Rusty Lake series, and will be coming out some time this fall. For more information, check out the Steam page for it, or developers Rusty Lake’s Twitter.
