God of War as a series is no stranger to spinoffs, in the original God of War trilogy we had some great side games like God of War: Chains of Olympus in 2008 and God of War: Ghost of Sparta in 2010, some people would even consider the current God of War games as spinoffs themselves, or at least a thorough rebranding of the IP. God of War is a big franchise, it’s no surprise a new God of War spinoff was announced they want to saturate the market with as many games as possible, it IS a surprise that the announced God of War spinoff game is going to be delayed to 2026, as reported by GameSpot.
We had heard news of this spinoff back in March, where Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb revealed that the game would take place during the Greek era of God of War and as Tom Henderson said Jeff Grubb would also reveal during a discussion of the spinoff on Twitter, it would have been a 2.5D Metroidvania game as well.
Hearing a lot of scuttlebutt about the 2.5D/metroidvania game or whatever it will be, yeah. Seems to be much smaller in scale than what I initially thought.

Not the first IP to give 2.5D side scrolling a try after being almost solely 3D for its entire lifespan, titles such as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate were 2D Metroidvania titles that came from 3D games (Castlevania is, of course, the progenitor of “Metroidvanias” but Lords of Shadow was a new thing).
All these rumors and speculations are moot, however. As stated above, it’s been reported that this spinoff has been delayed to next year. Of course, as also stated by that GameSpot article, Sony Santa Monica have said absolutely nothing about making a new God of War game, so while this is news from insiders, there’s no official source behind it. For all we know, a new God of War game isn’t being worked on at all and I’m just writing about ghosts, rumors about rumors.
