Earlier this week, Ubisoft announced that their next online presentation of the Ubisoft Forward will be taking place next week on September 10. While we already know that it will heavily feature the upcoming Immortals Fenyx Rising, they also promised some surprise reveals as well. One of those surprises may have just been spoiled as well known Bloomberg video game reporter Jason Schreier stated on recent episode of the Triple Click podcast that the company will “announce a bunch of games like the Prince of Persia remake that was leaked a couple of weeks ago.” This was subsequently followed by story from Video Games Chronicle, who states that according to their own Ubisoft source, the claim made by Schreier was correct.
If both Schreier and Video Games Chronicles turn out to be correct in this endeavor, then we’re in for an amazing announcement next week. This of course is only further fueled by the fact that there were actual listings of the game few weeks back, which was also mentioned by Schreier to be genuine and real. It’s also important to note that this has nothing to do with the recently announced Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time, which is a VR escape room title that is only playable in certain locations and not as easily accessible as a home console/PC title.
It’s been a little over ten years since we received a proper Prince of Persia game from Ubisoft, with Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands that launched alongside the live-action movie in 2010. Before that, the series was one of the company’s staple franchises which was also considered to be one of gaming’s best trilogies. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones were all excellent platform/action/puzzle titles that were stalwarts for the gaming scene in the early to mid-2000s.
Ubisoft then changed the formula up a bit with the 2008 Prince of Persia, which was generally well-received, but not quite as popular as the Sands trilogy. During this time Ubisoft gained ton of momentum with the advent of the Assassins Creed franchise, which ironically was originally going to be the next installment for Prince of Persia. Once the aforementioned Forgotten Sands launched to rather low sales, it was apparent that Ubisoft was shifting its focus to the Assassin’s Creed series. Ubisoft confirmed this in 2013 when they said that the Prince of Persia was on “pause.”
