Rumor: Nintendo Might be Adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color Titles to Nintendo Switch Online this Month

It looks like Nintendo might be bringing some more retro titles to their Switch Online feature, possibly sometime this month. Originally reported in a podcast from Nate the Hate which was then followed up by Nintendo Life, and now corroborated by sources for Eurogamer, the company is potentially getting ready to unveil Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles for the Nintendo Switch Online feature. In addition, Eurogamer adds that they “have heard that other retro platforms are also on the cards.”

Nintendo currently has a little more than 100 titles for the Nintendo Switch Online service at this time, all of which are NES or SNES titles. While all three sources are stating that the company will in fact bring games from the beloved handheld series, they did not state which ones in particular will be added. They also did not confirm which specific date that Nintendo will make that official. The third anniversary of the Nintendo Switch Online service is on September 18, only a mere two weeks away. This could indicate the belief that they’ll add the Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles this month.

Originally people thought that Nintendo would add these titles during the Game Boy’s 30th Anniversary in 2019. But both the Japanese and American dates came and went without so much as a peep from the company. However, with such strong indications from all three publications, there might be something to look forward to by the month’s end. Nintendo is also due for a new Nintendo Direct, which is how they usually announce such features, as well as title reveals and updates.

As for Eurogamer’s aforementioned comment, it’s anyone’s guess as to what else they could add. It’s possible that Nintendo will also push out titles for the Game Boy’s successor, the Game Boy Advance, which itself has an extremely expansive library. Only time will tell if Nintendo will make such reveals, and with the online features anniversary fast approaching, that time is quickly running out.
