It’s looking more and more likely that the PlayStation 5 will be getting a slimmed down version in the foreseeable future. The X account for Better Way Electronic, an Australian PlayStation repair specialist, has posted a very brief video which shows the supposed slimmed console with a complete 360 degree view. Images of this system were originally posted on a Chinese forum, but this video gives us a clear and vivid view of the console. This is also the same system rumored to have the removable disc drive, which can also be seen as a huge additional piece on the hardware.
The outer shell of the PlayStation 5 also seems to have been given a wider space, making it easier for breathability and less of a chance of overheating. There is also an indentation/slits that goes right on the top of the shell. Besides the massive disc drive, this is the most notable difference between the current model and this apparent slimmed down version. There are also dual USB-C ports on the front of the hardware as opposed to the single USB-C and USB-A ports which are on the current version. However, as far as being a “slimmed down” version, this looks like anything but. It’s possible that the removable disc drive will make it seem more compact, but for the time being, it’s a got a much larger frame than the current iteration.
Rumors of a new PlayStation 5 model began to swirl sometime last year, which also included the aforementioned removable disc drive. Those rumors included the slimmed down version earlier this year, and was also allegedly coming sometime later this year. Ironically the latter of this information came from none other than Microsoft during their waiting period of the FTC trial. They also mentioned that it was going to cost $399.99, a $100 difference from the original system. Sony has not made any official comment on any of these rumors/leaks, but with so much information coming out, it’s more than likely a matter of time before the company makes an official reveal.
