As anticipation for Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI begins to ramp up, the publicity team has decided to announce another trailer for the game. This will be the third official trailer belonging to GTA VI, though it most likely will not be the last. The game itself is not scheduled to release until later this year, in November, and still needs a release trailer at minimum. Additionally, previously released titles in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, such as GTA V, were accompanied by up to nine trailers, including character introductions and spotlights.
The first trailer, released on December 4, 2023, and set against Tom Petty’s Love is a Long Road (1989), introduced Lucia, the first female protagonist the franchise has seen. It begins with a panoramic view of some areas of the city, before being interrupted by Lucia’s parole officer asking a simple question: “Lucia, do you know why you’re here?”
“Bad luck, I guess,” responds Lucia, as the camera cuts to show several speedboats out at sea, more of Vice City, a crowded beach, and wild partying. After displaying a large sign that reads “VICE,” a brief montage of fictional media posts flash across the screen. These posts include a boat party with a caption that reads “Ay papi! Save some sugar for the rest of us!”, an “uninvited guest” in the form of a crocodile showing up before a pool party, and, on brand for a game set in the Grand Theft Auto universe, a young woman twerking on the roof of a sedan. “The only way we’re gonna get through this is by sticking together, being a team,” Lucia says to her partner, as more auto theft flashes across the screen.
The second trailer, released over a year later, on May 6, 2025, is about a minute longer than the first. This trailer finally gives a name to Lucia’s partner from the first trailer: Jason. It is revealed that Jason works as a repairman before he drives to the local prison to bail out Lucia. The trailer explores Lucia’s and Jason’s relationship, both romantically and professionally. “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them,” reads the caption, “but when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”
The third and newest trailer is officially titled “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” and is expected to be even longer than the second. Not much is known about it yet, other than the fact that it will be expanding on lore already addressed in earlier trailers, and could potentially contain new characters or mechanics. Rockstar Games has partnered with Netflix to bring fans the latest trailer on August 27 at 12 PM PT, six hours before it premiers on YouTube for the general public.
