Recently, Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio held their second-ever RGG Summit. Headlined by RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama, the event revealed key information about RGG Studio’s upcoming releases for their flagship series Like A Dragon – Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The panel also featured cast members and new footage for both games. The RGG Summit Summer 2023 event was displayed on livestream with simultaneous translations and commentary.
First, Yokoyama introduced Gaiden‘s new combat system. As former lead protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, players will employ two fighting styles against enemies: Yakuza and Agent. The Yakuza Style is Kiryu’s classic street-fighting style primarily focused on physical contact action; this style will draw on Kiryu’s techniques from previous games. Further, Kiryu’s new Agent style implements gadgets like wires, drones, and grenades against enemies. Inspired by spy movies, this style is effective for fighting multiple enemies depending on the situation.
After discussing gameplay, Yokoyama expanded on Gaiden‘s characters. Alongside Kiryu (Takaya Kuroda), Gaiden will feature members of the Watase Family yakuza such as Lieutenant Kosei Shishido (Yasukaze Motomiya) and Captain Yuki Tsuruno (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi). Other characters include Akame (First Summer Uika), Sotenbori’s “jack of all trades”, and Homare Nishitani III (Kim Jaeuck), third Patriarch of the Kijin Clan. As for the latter, Yokoyama explained how Nishitani III inherited the name from Yakuza 0 character Homare Nishitani, who was the first Kijin Clan Patriarch.
Furthermore, Yokoyama clarified Gaiden‘s setting. Taking place three years after Yakuza 6, Gaiden features Sotenbori and Yokohama as explorable cities; Gaiden also contains a new region similar to Osaka Castle. Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will release on November 9th for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows.
Soon after, RGG Studio showcased Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. While they didn’t provide as much in-depth coverage, they did present a story cutscene of a conversation between Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga (Kazuhiro Nakaya).
The cutscene suggests a romance subplot between Kasuga and fellow Yakuza: Like A Dragon character Saeko Mukoda. As for Infinite Wealth‘s previous trailer, Yokoyama confirmed it was taken from in-game footage. He also described the trailer’s locale as a “foreign country” for the time being. This place alongside Yokohama will be a key location in Infinite Wealth. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth will launch in early 2024 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
RGG Studio announced a follow-up event called RGG Summit Fall 2023, which will be held this September. More details about Gaiden and Infinite Wealth will be revealed there.
