Retro Games Limited originally created an Indiegogo campaign to recreate the classic 80’s computer and console, the Commodore 64. Now, they’ve recently updated backers on a new plan to do a worldwide launch of TheC64 mini, their new version of the computer-console which will be much smaller than the original and include additional ports and a classic joystick.
Retro consoles have seen a comeback in smaller and updated versions as of late, as seen with Nintendo’s plans to sell more NES Classic Edition consoles in the future in addition to their current release of the SNES Classic Mini. New companies and groups have also come together to create their own consoles to utilize original game hardware and ROMs as seen with the Seedi System for old PlayStation games. TheC64 Mini marks an addition to the retro console group, maintaining much of the original Commodore 64’s design. TheC64 will contain a number of the original games maintained in the same retro, pixel-style, with titles such as Cosmic Causeway, Battle Valley, Hawkeye, and Netherworld ready to play upon release. By going to TheC64 Mini website and clicking on a game, you will get a description, pictures, and controls of what will be expected when playing the selected title. The system contains an HDMI port so games can be played on any modern television set, a noticeable change from the small screen of the original.
Retro Games Limited still plans to commit to making full-size and portable versions of the revived console in the future, but has not announced any official release dates. Backers of the original project on Indiegogo will receive a limited edition TheC64, limited edition signed and commissioned artwork, a full size TheC64 when it is released, and a handheld version when it is released. Those interested in updates on the system can to follow Retro Games Limited on their Twitter, community forum, as well as the original Indiegogo campaign for more information.
TheC64 Mini will be avaialbale early 2018 at around $69.99.
