Following the success of the technical marvel and award-winning Control, Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games are ready to revisit its world for a sequel title. Earlier today, the sequel to Control was announced in a report by Remedy, announcing a signed agreement with 505 Games to co-develop and co-publish Control 2 formerly known as Codename Heron. Though Control 2 is still in its concept stage, it is expected to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and will use Remedy’s Northlight engine.
Mikael Kasurinen, Game Director of the Control Franchise showed his excitement at the sequel’s official announcement in a statement:
“With Control, we leaped into the unknown. We wanted to create something new. Something different and unexpected. A world like no other. Thank you, the audience, for making Control such a success for us.” said Kasurinen. “With Control 2, we’ll take another leap into the unknown. It’ll be an unexpected journey. It’ll take a while, but to put it mildly, this is the most exciting project I’ve ever worked on. It’s still early days, but it will be worth the wait.”
According to the report, Remedy will keep Control’s intellectual property while the development, marketing, post-launch investments and future net revenues generated by the game will be equally split between the two development companies. What also should be noted is the sheer scale of the sequel. Remedy Entertainment previously announced plans to collaborate with 505 Games for “…a bigger-budget Control Game” in 2019. Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy, confirmed later in the report that Control 2 was in fact the big-budget game in question. Rami and Raffi Galante, co-CEOs of Digital Bros Group/505 Games expressed their excitement for the collaboration:
“We are excited to deepen our cooperation with Remedy and continue the success story of Control together. Since its launch in 2019, Control has sold over 3 million copies,” said the Galantes. “Control is the biggest investment 505 Games has ever made, so it has a special place in our hearts. We are grateful to the whole player community that has made Control such a long-lasting and loved game, and are even more excited to bring out Control 2.”
The investment in the next Control title is massive, to say the least. Control 2’s initial development budget is shaping up to be around 50 million EUR, or around 51 million USD. Given the success of the first game in the series, it’s safe to assume that Remedy and 505 Games have a big surprise in store. After all, considering the quality of its first title, the expectations will be high.
