Button remapping was a feature thought to only be included on Xbox One’s Elite Controller. Turns out that it is a feature coming to all Xbox One controllers in the near future.
Director of Program Management for Xbox Mike Ybarra revealed this knowledge in response to a fan question on Twitter. Button configuration is standard on the Playstation 4 and was a main focus of the fans question.
@StavEllis @XboxP3 It’s coming for all controllers soon.

Good news for gamers who don’t want to drop the $149.99 for an Xbox Elite Controller. A deep price tag but apart from the remappable buttons, the controller features a long list of customizable options. These include (but are not limited to) interchangeable thumbsticks and D-pad buttons, rear paddles (similar to Scuf controllers), and the ability to adjust the sensitivity to one’s liking on the triggers. The Elite Controller is set to launch on October 27 later this month.
No word yet on when the button configuration will debut on the standard controllers though it may come when the new Xbox One Experience User Interface releases in November. Backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games is another very anticipated feature set to come along with the new UI.
