Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered Announced by THQ Nordic

Ever since THQ Nordic acquired most of the original THQ core IPs, they’ve been on roll. Last week, they surprised and delighted the Internet community and nostalgia-trippers worldwide by announcing a plan to revive a huge collection of licensed Nickelodeon games, and today, they announced that they would be bringing back one of the most popular installments of one of their most memorable franchises: Red Faction.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered will come to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime in Q2 2018, according to the press release. Among the new features are “fully reworked graphics,” such as refurbished textures, lighting, and shaders, and native 4K support for certain console platforms TBD. It’s unclear if there will be any gameplay changes, but THQ Nordic assure that “‘destruction’ will remain its middle name.”

The Red Faction series spanned four games from 2000 to 2011 and ended after Red Faction: Armageddon, which sold disastrously and helped THQ lose nearly $40 million dollars in 2011. However, 2009’s Guerrilla is looked back upon fondly for its open-world structure, highly destructible environments, and wide variety of ways to tackle different objectives. If there was any game in the series for THQ Nordic to remaster in order to revive enthusiasm for the series, it would be this one.

More details surrounding the release will be “announced in due time,” so prospective Martian revolutionaries will have to wait for a more specific release date. In the meantime, fans of Red Faction can rest easy knowing that the franchise hasn’t been abandoned completely—and fans of other forgotten THQ franchises may find a new hope that their favorites may be coming back too.

Matt Mersel: There are a lot of things I love in this world—movies, music, Game of Thrones, a nice homecooked meal—but I love few things as much as video games. They're one of the final frontiers of art, and esports figures to be one of the biggest industries of the century. Everyone should care, and it's my job to show people why.
