The sales numbers behind Rockstar Games’ popular action-adventure title Red Dead Redemption 2 were recently revealed. The game has sold tens of millions of copies and officially become the fourth best selling video game of all time.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s sales information was revealed in an earnings call for the game’s publisher Take-Two Interactive. According to the call, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 79 million units in the seven years since the game’s release in 2018. The Red Dead Redemption franchise has sold a total 106 million units, with around 75% of those sales belonging to Red Dead Redemption 2. 

The call also reveals that Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best selling video game of the past seven years. The massive sales for Red Dead Redemption 2 also classify the title as the fourth highest grossing video game of all time. According to the list of the highest grossing video games, the only three games which have outsold Red Dead Redemption 2 are Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 5, and Wii Sports. These titles sold an astonishing 350 million units, 220 million units, and 82.9 million units respectively. The previous fourth best-selling video game, Mario Kart 8 / Deluxe, sold around 78 million units, which is around 1 million less than Red Dead Redemption 2.

The financial success of Red Dead Redemption 2 reflects the broader success of other titles from Rockstar Games. Rockstar Games’ GTA 5 is the second best-selling video game of all time, leaving the company with two of the top four highest grossing games. Rockstar’s future titles are likely to have a similar level of financial success, with their highly anticipated title GTA 6 being expected to sell an astounding $3 billion within the first year of its release. 

The overwhelming financial success of Red Dead Redemption 2 cannot be understated. However, whether or not said financial success of will lead to the development of another Red Dead Redemption title remains unclear.
