Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei series is world famous at this point, while the standout is certainly the Persona series at this point in time the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games have always had a diehard fanbase supporting them. This leaves the various spinoffs that aren’t Persona out to fend for themselves, but they tend to do well in their own right such as Devil Survivor, Digital Devil Saga, and of course, the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha duology, the first game of which received a remaster in the form of Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army just yesterday.
This isn’t just an upscaled version of Raidou Kuzonoha, which was a gorgeous game to begin with, but it’s a true blue remaster as the name suggests. Updated graphically and with new voice acting and stylish new UI, Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army puts a fresh coat of paint on much of the game, especially the gameplay with an updated combat system.
Persona fans are used to the slice-of-life by day, superhero by night dichotomy while mainline Shin Megami Tensei fans are used to a more fatalistic apocalyptic setting, Raidou rides the line between the two, being set in 1930’s Japan at the cusp of Japan stepping onto the world stage. Playing as a detective and dealing with historical figures such as Russia’s Greatest Love Machine, Rasputin, Raidou was always a standout in the series for more than just its unique gameplay.
If this sounds interesting to you, Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army is out right now for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStations 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and on PC through Steam. Go ahead and buy it if it interests you, Atlus’ late 90s and mid 2000s library has a lot of gems in there that few people have played and many haven’t even been translated, be sure to let Atlus know you’re interested!
