PUBG Unveils New Cosmetics To Fund Upcoming Invitational Tournament

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG, continues to grow and excel despite still technically being in Early Access.  Next up for the massively popular battle royale shooter: the Gamescom PUBG Invitational Tournament, taking place in Cologne, Germany from August 23rd to the 26th.

The Gamescom PUBG Invitational will be the game’s first ever offline invitational tournament, and will bring many of the game’s most prominent content creators, streamers, and influencers together to compete across multiple game modes, including Solo mode, Duo mode, Duo First Person Perspective mode and Squad mode, spread across the multi-day event.  There will also be daily qualifiers at the event, hosted by developer Bluehole and ESL, for attendees at Gamescom to get a chance to play with/against the invited competitors.

PUBG will be adding new cosmetics to the game in advance of this tournament, beginning August 3rd.  The cosmetics will involve microtranscactions, serving to help fund the tournament’s operations expenses and build the prize pool, as well as test out a more fleshed-out cosmetics system for once the game is actually fully released.  The new cosmetic items will be outfits and clothing items inspired by the classic film Battle Royale, and will come in 3 different crates: the Wanderer Crate, the Survivor Crate, and the Gamescom Invitational Crate.

The Wanderer and Survivor Crates will be free to open, but contain only limited clothing options.  To access the full array of possible cosmetics, players will need to open the Gamescom Invitational Crate, which will require the purchase of a special key for $2.50 USD to open.  These crates will only be available until the Invitational concludes on August 27th, at which point they will be gone.

The Gamescom PUBG Invitational will be livestreamed on the game’s many social media channels, including the official PUBG Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.
