Ubisoft have found themselves in spotlight over the course of 2024 for a number of issues. From the controversial reception of one of their most popular franchises that eventually led to its delay, to the notice of unhappy investors requesting the company dismiss multiple developers or take the company private, and the fact that Ubisoft is being sued for sharing personal data from users of their game stores to Meta. Now, even more reports have come out, claiming that the dev team of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been disbanded by the company.
French YouTube channel, ORIGAMI – Fold and unfold the video game, broke the news on their channel, claiming:
The game did not meet sales expectations, and this was cited as the reason behind the decision…The game’s fate had already been decided a few weeks after its release.
He also stated that by Spring of 2024, it had become clear that after releasing a few DLCs and cosmetics, it would be the end for the title and that the development team pushed for a sequel of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but was turned down. The development reportedly then pushed for two expansions in hopes to prove to the higher-ups that a sequel could work. ORIGAMI’s source lastly claimed that the higher-ups justified their actions by claiming that in the long run, “A sequel would cannibalize the sales of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” and that resources were needed to work on other projects within the company.
Although it received fairly high praise from critics and players, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was released on January 18th, 2024 and has since only reached $15 million in revenue to date. The game also accumulated around 300,000 total players throughout the year. Ubisoft have to make any comments on these reports.
