Preview: CyberCorp

While on a road trip this week, I got the chance to try out Megame’s upcoming sci-fi title CyberCorp, a cyberpunk twin-stick shooter launching in early access on Steam on August 20. Conveniently for me, the game fully supports Steam Deck integration, allowing me to play on the ride between destinations. It’s a perfect game for the Steam Deck, combining stylish isometric graphics, a simple, yet compelling, storyline, and tight RPG and shooter mechanics for a surprisingly diverse looter-shooter experience (and I haven’t even gotten to the co-op yet).

The story revolves around the deus ex machina of the game’s respawn system, portraying a world in which one corporation has discovered a way to create infinitely reproduceable synthetic soldiers that are controlled by remote operators (such as yourself). Levels vary between the current set of 15 story missions and procedurally generated side missions, both of which can prove fairly challenging if you don’t prioritize your builds correctly. Boxes full of powerful loot are hidden behind puzzles and hidden paths, encouraging the player to take a closer look at the detailed futuristic setting for clues and interactive objects.

That loot is the bread and butter of CyberCorp, providing the player with weapons, armor, and a huge variety of special abilities to build a loadout from. Loadouts consist of a primary, sidearm, and melee weapon, head, torso, and leg armor, and two to three active abilities. Higher rarity items feature slots for upgrade cards, which provide stat boosts similar to other games in the RPG-shooter space like Borderlands or Destiny. Active abilities have a wide range of selections to choose from, including sentry turrets, teleporting dashes, healing stations, and heavy grenades.

Packing a lot of depth beneath its humble surface, CyberCorp is sure to be a fun time solo or with friends for Steam Deck and PC gamers alike. Fans of the looter-shooter genre, as well as twin stick action games like Enter the Gungeon or the original Helldivers, should absolutely be on the look out for when the game releases into early access on August 20 on Steam. The game’s Steam page is up now for anyone looking to add it to their wishlist before release.
