Today, during PlayStation’s second State of Play broadcast, a new game set in the Predator film universe was announced. Titled Predator: Hunting Grounds, this new game will be an asymmetric multiplayer shooter developed by Illfonic, best known for Friday the 13th: The Game, in partnership with 20th Century Fox and will be published by Sony. The game will also be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 upon release.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Charles Brungardt, the CEO of Illfonic, described what the game will be. A group of players will play as a military fire team that”pack state-of-the-art conventional firepower, from shotguns and SMGs to sniper rifles and more.” Then, one player will be in control of the titular Predator with the goal of hunting down the other players using the “infamous Plasmacaster,” the Predator’s iconic invisibility camouflage, and an “advanced vision mode.” This is all while military players try to complete other missions.
Illfonic’s last game, Friday the 13th: The Game, was also an asymmetric multiplayer game, so the right developer was chosen for this project. That game saw mild success, but unfortunately the studio had to quit working on future content for the game due to a legal dispute between the writer and producer of the original Friday the 13th film. However, a Nintendo Switch version of the game is set to release sometime this Spring.
Brungardt states that everyone at the studio are fans of the IP and promises they “are staying true to the world.” While Predator: Hunting Grounds is still early in development, Illfonic promises to continue to bring updates about the game to fans “in the near future.” Predator: Hunting Grounds is set to release on PlayStation 4 at some point next year.
