Police Arrest Criminal Responsible for XBL, PSN Outages

Millions of ticked off gamers who couldn’t play online with their Xbox and PlayStation consoles over the holidays because of the hacking attacks on both Xbox Live and PlayStation Networks are likely rejoicing over the arrest of one of the culprits.

22-year-old Vinnie Omari of Twickenham, England was arrested by the South East REgional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), who alleged his connection to the Lizard Squad, the hacking group responsible for the XBL and PSN outages. He was booked last Monday and was released on Tuesday on bail, according to this police form posted by independent security expert Brian Krebs:

Krebs was also responsible for revealing Omari as one of the members of Lizard Squad, along with a man called Julius Kivimäki.

Speaking to the Daily Dot, Omari himself said that the police “took everything, Xbox One, phones, laptops, computer USBs, etc.”

Additionally, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation have also brought in a second person with alleged ties to hacking attacks, a 17-year-old simply known as “Ryan,” according to Finnish site Yle. He has not been arrested, and as only been brought in for questioning.

Ryan was recently featured in an interview with Sky News, in which he claimed that the attacks on XBL and PSN were done in an effort to raise awareness over the lack of cyber security in both Microsoft and Sony.

More updates on this matter will surely be made available once the New Year’s holiday is over.
