All the battles have been decided and new world champions have been declared as the 2019 Pokémon World Championships wrapped up in Washington D.C. earlier today. New champions were crowned in every division across the Pokémon TCG, VGC, Pokkén Tournament DX, and the first ever Pokémon GO Invitational.
In the VGC, the Junior Division, those who were born in 2008 or later, finals saw Pi Wu from Taiwan Rayquaza/Xerneas/Nihilego/Tapu Fini/Incineroar/Amoonguss defeat Teddy French from the UK using the team of Smeargle/Ferrothorn/Mawile/Stakataka/Groudon/Dawn Wings Necrozma in the three game set 2-1. The Seniors Divison, born between 2004-2007, finals saw Ko Tsukide of Japan with the team of Rayquaza/Xerneas/Incineroar/Tapu Fini/Amoonguss/Togedemaru win 2-1 in the set against Lewis Tan of Australia who was using a variation of the Perish Trap team with Groudon/Yveltal/Gengar/Incineroar/Tapu Fini/Ferrothorn.
The Masters Division, born in 2003 or earlier, saw an all Japan finals as reigning back-to-back Japan National Champion Hirofumi Kimura took on Naoto Mizobuchi who placed in the Top 4 of this year’s Nationals. Mizobuchi using the team of Groudon/Lunala/Salamence/Incineroar/Tapu Fini/Stakataka ended up sweeping the finals 2-0 against Kimura who was using the team of Umbreon/Dusk Mane Necrozma/Kangaskhan/Salamence/Tapu Lele/Groudon.
In the Pokémon TCG, Haruki Miyamoto of Japan swept the Junior Finals 2-0 using his Pikachu & Zekrom GX deck against Issac Terceira of the US and his Reshiram & Charizard GX deck. The Seniors Finals saw Germany’s Kaya Lichleitner using her Reshiram & Charizard GX deck sweep the set 2-0 against Grant Shen of the US and his Gardevoir & Sylveon GX deck. The Masters Finals saw Henry Brand of Australia using his Mewtwo and Mew GX deck sweep the 2016 World Champion Shintaro Ito and his Blacephalon GX deck 2-0.
The first ever Pokémon GO Invitational saw YouTuber PogoKieng win the 8-man event. In Pokkén Tournament DX, the Seniors Division saw rematch from last year’s Finals as Ashgreninja1 of the US used Shadow Mewtwo/Aegislash/Mewtwo to defeat Kato of Japan using Pikachu Libre/Aegislash/Mewtwo. The Masters Division finals saw Japan’s Subutan use the combination of Chandelure before switching to Aegislash/Braixen/Pikachu Libre to defeat Haruyuki and his Pikachu Libre/Aegislash/Darkrai team.
To end the event, it was announced that the 2020 Pokémon World Championships will be held in London, England. This is just the second time that the World Championships will be held outside the United States, following the 2014 event held in Vancouver, and this is the first time in the event’s history that it will be held outside North America.
