The latest Pokémon release, Pokémon Pokopia, has shaken up expectations for the franchise by earning critical praise at a level no other game in the series has quite matched. What’s remarkable about this achievement is that Pokopia isn’t a typical turn-based Pokémon adventure. Instead, it’s a life simulation experience developed for the Nintendo Switch 2 that leans heavily into cozy, creative gameplay rather than battles.

According to early review data highlighted by IGN, the game has surged to the top of the series’ critical rankings, becoming the highest-rated Pokémon title in franchise history. On Metacritic, it currently holds a score of 88 which surpasses every mainline and spin-off entry that came before it except for Pokemon Y which is currently tied at 88. This is quite a remarkable feat for a brand that has been around for nearly three decades and has produced dozens of beloved releases.

In Pokopia, players take on the role of a Pokémon called Ditto that has transformed into a human shape, and instead of capturing and training Pokémon to fight, the focus is on building up environments, befriending creatures, and using their unique abilities to shape the world around you. This spin on the traditional formula feels more akin to popular life sims like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but with plenty of Pokémon flavor woven throughout. 

Critics have responded enthusiastically. The game’s Metacritic score is currently tied with long-standing favorites such as Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, which sit near the top of the rankings with strong scores themselves. Out of the 59 early reviews from Metacritic over 97% of them were positive and only 3% were mixed and 0% were negative. 

In the reviews from Metacritic outlets have praised Pokopia for its charm, inventive mechanics, and the fresh take it brings to the Pokémon universe. While some outlets did offer more modest scores, the overwhelming consensus from reviewers has been that this unexpected detour from the franchise’s usual formula works surprisingly well and offers both longtime fans and newcomers something genuinely fun and different. 

With its elevated critical standing even before launch, Pokopia has sparked excitement and conversations about where Pokémon might go next, marking a meaningful moment as the series enters its 30th anniversary.
