Pokémon GO has been proven to be a tremendous smash hit – unfortunately, a smash hit means a bigger strain on the servers than expected. Players grinding away at the new real-life Pokémon experience this weekend were troubled by an error screen upon starting the game (myself included).
Pro-tip: if you see the log-in screen upon starting the app, you’ll most likely encounter the message below.
According to Niantic CEO John Hanke, the developer is well aware of the server issues and “hard at work on a fix.” As a result, the game’s international launch has been paused until server capacity has been fixed – meaning players in places like the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are watching their American friends with tremendous jealousy.
Thus far, Pokémon GO has been tremendously popular in the US, after an initial launch in Australia and New Zealand. Social media is filled with countless anecdotes from players encountering others in the streets at all hours of the night, couples driving around all day hunting down Pokémon and all sorts of nonsense and memery when it comes to taking gyms. The rest of the world will certainly be thrilled once the real-life trainer experience truly goes international.
