History keeps getting made with God of War Ragnarok. It became the fastest-selling entry in the series to date with its day-one physical sales greater than the full-week launch sales of every other God of War game. Now, PlayStation has announced that God of War Ragnarok is the fastest-selling first-party launch game in PlayStation history.

5.1 million copies of Ragnarok were sold in its debut week. God of War (2018) passed 23 million copies sold on PlayStation 4 and PC as of November 2022. It was reported that the game sold 19.5 million copies back in October 2021. God of War (2018) also became PlayStation’s biggest PC launch when it was released on the platform earlier this year.

God of War Ragnarok beat out The Last of Us Part II which became the fastest-selling launch game when it was released back in 2020 selling more than 4 million copies. Prior to Part II, Marvel’s Spider-Man became the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive selling 3.3 million copies in the first three days of release. Rounding out the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusives is God of War(2018) which sold over 3.1 million copies in its first three days, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Ghost of Tsushima.

Developer Sony Santa Monica Studio responded to the news thanking fans for their support. “Genuinely it is due to the support if God of War fans across the world, they are the ones that decided to pick up the game. Thank you so much to everyone who has gone on the journey with us so far.”

God of War Ragnarok leads all games this year with 10 nominations for The Game Awards 2022. The titles competing for Game of the Year include God of War Ragnarok, Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Stray. The Game Awards 2022 takes place on December 8, 2022.

Cory Barlog, Creative Director at Santa Monica Studio teased what the studio’s working on next saying in an interview with LA Times that they are “currently spread out on a lot of different things.”

What those things are for Santa Monica Studio, we’ll have to wait and see.
