PlayStation Bosses Talk 30 Years of PlayStation, AI, The Future, & More

As PlayStation celebrates its 30th anniversary, PlayStation bosses Herman Hulst and C0-CEO Hideaki Nishino had an interview with BBC where they talked about 30 years of PlayStation, the impact of AI on the video game industry, and the plans for growth in the future.

One of the biggest things that has kept growing and growing over the past few years is the advancement of AI throughout all areas of technology, with many in the games industry afraid how it may overtake jobs in the near future.

Hulst acknowledges that AI was changing gaming but said that there will always be a future for human developers.

“I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content,” he told the BBC.

“Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.”

As for growing in the future, PlayStation is looking to continue its recent run of successful adaptations with The Last of Us, Uncharted, and more. Currently, Hulst is looking at the God of War tv show being the next big adaptation that they are focusing on.
“I am hoping to raise the PlayStation IP outside of just the gaming category and elevate it so it sits comfortably within the larger entertainment industry,” he said.
Both Hulst and Nishino are also looking at growing PlayStation in other areas, such as the recent rise in handhelds. According to multiple reports, PlayStation is developing new handheld capable of playing PS5 games natively.
As Nishino points out, the way players play games is changing. He said that the PlayStation Portal has been “a huge success.”

“Recently, we just announced a beta programme… allowing Cloud streaming directly to the handheld,” he said. “We’re always exploring various options for how players can play games.”
