Sony has posted blog in regards to the PlayStation 5 and how controllers and peripherals will be able to interact with it. One of the focuses for this was the Dualshock 4, which is the main controller of the PlayStation 4, and what it can and cannot do with the next-generation system. In this post Sony confirmed that the Dualshock 4 will in fact work on the PlayStation 5, but only on “select PlayStation 4 games.” They also confirmed that the Dualshock 4 will not work with any PlayStation 5 titles, as those can only be played with the newer controller, the Dualsense.
Unfortunately, Sony does not list any of the PlayStation 4 titles that the Dualshock 4 will be compatible with, but as we head towards the 2020 holiday release of the console, it’s more than likely that they will unveil that list sooner than later. Sony also stated that certain PlayStation 4 peripherals will also work on the PlayStation 5 for PlayStation 4 titles. This includes racing wheels, arcade fighting sticks, and flight simulator sticks. On top of that, the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with specific PS VR games on the PlayStation 5.
Lastly, the company mentioned that PlayStation Camera will also be compatible with the PlayStation 5, albeit with an adapter that will be required to utilize it. Worry not though, as Sony also stated that the adapter will be free for all PS VR users. Sony will announce how to get the adapter at a later time. While this doesn’t look like it’s a whole lot of new information, this actually gives us a lot of insight as to what Sony is planning for the PlayStation 5.
We already know that the console is going to be backwards compatible, with the expected number of PlayStation 4 titles offered to be staggering one as well. While we don’t know which exact games will be available via backwards compatibility, there are already so many excellent ones to choose from, and it’s a high probability that they’ll make onto that list. Speaking of PlayStation 4 games, Sony also announced that the next State of Play is scheduled to take place this Thursday, August 6, with the focus being on PlayStation 4 and PS VR titles.
