As the next generation of consoles nears its’ first anniversary, the PS5 has began to stake its’ place as the dominant console on the market. Sony has recently revealed that their console has officially reached 10 million sold, making it Sony’s fastest selling console of all time and potentially putting it at a solid lead over the Xbox Series X|S.
Eurogamer reports that the PS5 reached this landmark on July 18th, just under a month faster than the PS4. The PS4 had been Sony’s fastest selling console, but this news confirms that the title has officially been taken by the Playstation 5.
After its’ rocky launch, the PS5 is still one of the most difficult pieces of hardware to get a hold of today. Sony President and CEO Jim Ryan assured prospective buyers that getting their consoles on more store shelves is a priority for the company in the same press release, saying:
While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply… I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for [Sony Interactive Entertainment].
Despite these impressive figures, it’s impossible to confirm or deny whether this means the PS5 has pulled ahead of the Xbox Series X|S in sales. Since Microsoft has a policy of rarely releasing hardware sales publicly, there is no official information on how many units the Series X|S has sold. However, insiders report that Microsoft’s sales are notably lower than those of the PS5.
With many major releases, like Horizon: Forbidden West, Ghosts of Tsushima: Directors Cut and Santa Monica Studio’s highly-anticipated sequel to God of War (2016), many suspect that the PS5’s high sales are far from over.
