NBA 2k18 has encountered various bugs since its release, including player data losses and Nintendo Switch storage issues.
NBA 2k18 officially launched today September 19, though some fans were able to play the game earlier if they pre-ordered the standard edition or the legend edition. Buying and playing either edition early had its benefits, as players received bonuses such as outfits, MyTeam packs, virtual currency and more. The bonus virtual currency seemed to be the most beneficial since players will be riddled with microtransactions as the game progresses. Kotaku explored some of these transactions in detail, showing it is not only hard to accumulate virtual currency because players need to spend it on character upgrades, but also cosmetic changes like simple haircuts cost quite a bit, some going upwards of 1500 VC. The currency can be earned by winning individual games, or bought with real money starting at 5,000 VC for $1.99.
Unfortunately, many players who got a headstart on the new title have lost lot of their progress and virtual currency they bought in-game or received from pre-orders. After NBA 2k18’s latest patch, players reported the loss of characters they already created, loss of character items, and missing virtual currency they recently purchased, among other issues. On 2k’s official support website, they offered a solution on how to fix issues surrounding missing characters but this hasn’t solved everyone’s problems; on their official twitter, 2k has tweeted multiple times to update users on how to open support tickets while they try to amend the patch glitch as quickly as possible.
In one Reddit thread, those affected by the glitch appear to primarily be Xbox One users, but PS4 and PC users should make sure none of their saved data has changed since the latest patch.
Nintendo Switch users have also experienced issues with the game, as they’re unable to play it at all unless they download it on a microSD card and have “5GB per save file on the system memory.” Players need the microSD for both physical and digital copies of the game, and it is not included with either purchase. Upcoming large games will most likely have to use microSD as well, depending on the amount of space the games take up in addition to any additional DLC that will be available in the future.
NBA 2k18 is available to play on PC and Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
