Platinum Games To Explore Self-Publishing After Receiving A Capital Investment From Tencent

Today, Platinum Games, developer of the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, one of MXDWN’s top games of the decade, Astral Chain, and upcoming Babylon’s Fall announced that they have received capital investment from Tencent and have agreed to become partners. This is yet another partnership between Tencent another company in gaming. Over the course of 2019, Tencent has made deals with Razer, The Pokemon Company, Riot Games, Funcom, and Nintendo.

President and CEO of Platinum Games, Kenichi Sato said: “We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holding Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.”

As to what they plan to do with their new investment, Sato said: “We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high-quality games that stay true to our name.”

The next game coming from Platinum Games, Babylon’s Fall, coming next year, had a new trailer released during PlayStation’s last State of Play of 2019. The teaser trailer showcased gameplay for the first time. The game was revealed during Square Enix’s E3 Showcase last year.

Platinum Games is also working on Bayonetta 3 which was announced at the Game Awards three years ago. Last month, a leak revealed the Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle which is a remastered version of Bayonetta and Vanquish and will come with 4k graphics and runs at 60 frames per second. The dual-pack is set to be released on February 18, 2020 and the games can buy the games separately or together.

This partnership is somewhat similar to when NetEase invested in Quantic Dream by buying minority stake in the company. This allows Quantic Dream to take their games to different platforms other than PlayStation. They were able to bring their three latest games to PC.
