In a new interview with gamesindustry.biz, Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox discusses whether or not the company’s focus on Game Pass, Smart Delivery, and games available for all Xbox consoles is holding back development on games made exclusively for Xbox Series X. He also talks about the differences in strategy from PlayStation and how the evolution in technology is why their way is something they are very proud of.
PlayStation’s focus for PlayStation 5 is the same as it’s ever been. Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment and CEO said, “it’s time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5.” In contrast, Xbox Game Studios will be making games that will work across console generations which many on social media debate whether or not it’s going to work. Phil Spencer talked about how PC gaming was an inspiration for their current focus. “Yes, every developer is going to find a line and say that this is the hardware that I am going to support, but the diversity of hardware choice in PC has not held back the highest-fidelity PC games on the market. The highest fidelity PC games rival anything that anybody has ever seen in video games. So this idea that developers don’t know how to build games, or game engines, or ecosystems, that work across a set of hardware… there’s proof point in PC that shows that’s not the case.”
Talking about what makes the next-gen consoles unique, Spencer discussed that while all the new features are great, they shouldn’t exclude anybody from playing. “We should applaud the work that is going on with the SSD, and the work that is going on with audio, to pick some of the areas that Jim [Ryan] and Mark [Cerny] and the stuff that [PlayStation] is focused on. We should applaud load times and fidelity of scenes and framerate and input latency, and all of these things that we’ve focused on with the next generation,” Spencer said. “But that should not exclude people from being able to play. That’s our point. How do we create an ecosystem where if you want to play an Xbox game? we’re going to give you a way to go play it.”
