Phantom Abyss, developed by Team WIBY, is Steam’s newest game release filled with traps, caverns, temples, and treasure. Released for Early Game Access on June 22nd, 2021, Phantom Abyss is already rising in popularity amongst the gaming community. So what does this game have to offer, and how positive is the early reception of this game?
Phantom Abyss is a first-person, asynchronous multiplayer game that centers around a temple adventurer seeking relics and treasure. Players are tasked with retrieving a relic at the end of a temple, and once they are able to get their hands on the legendary relic, the temple is cleared forever and the player can collect their bounty. Each temple can only be accessed by each individual player one time, so once your heart count drops to zero, that’s the end of the dungeon dive!
Players, upon entering a temple, will be able to see ‘phantoms’, or the ghosts of past adventurers who failed to clear the temple and left their spirits behind to aid others. These phantoms can help new players avoid traps such as pitfalls, swinging axes, and retractable spikes. Players are given a whip, which allows them to clear certain puzzles, as well as ‘blessings’ they can buy with in-game currency, which earn them new abilities and give them a leg up on other adventurers.
Despite the game’s recent debut, fan reception is already incredibly positive. With more than 180 reviews at the time this article was written, Phantom Abyss has obtained a ‘Very Positive’ status on Steam’s in-site game review program, with even more reviews coming in. Much of the fan’s praise is based on the gameplay quality, temple-diving mechanics, soundtrack, and graphics. Many fans also compliment the game for minimal technical issues, despite the game still being in Early Game Access.
As of June 21st, Phantom Abyss was one of the top-selling games available on Steam, and also became the number one Early Access Game on Steam. Thousands of players have taken on the challenge of Phantom Abyss, and its popularity seems to still be on the rise. Overall fan reception seems to be distinctly positive, and with any luck, Phantom Abyss will stay on this upward trend.
