Bethesda says goodbye to Pete Hines after a 24 year long career with the company. Hines announced his retirement late Monday morning on X, formerly known as Twitter, in a statement that expressed his gratitude towards the company and excitement towards the next chapter in his life.
“…This was not a decision I came to easily or quickly, but after an amazing career, culminating in the incredible launch of Starfield, it feels like the time is right.” Hines wrote.
“This is certainly not goodbye by any means. Working with the amazing people, teams, and studios at Bethesda has been the greatest experience of my life,” he continued. “…Working with the amazing people, teams, and studios at Bethesda has been the greatest experience of my life. I’m incredibly proud of everything we have done together, and I’m genuinely excited to see the amazing things they will create next. Love you guys.”
Hines joined Bethesda Softworks in 1999 as the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Global Marketing and Communications. He alongside Todd Howard oversaw many of Bethesda’s most popular franchises including Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and more recently Starfield. Last October Hines was promoted to Head of Global Publishing.
Xbox CEO Phil Spencer and Bethesda themselves released separate statements within Hines well in his retirement.
“Pete’s public presence was only a small part of his role at Bethesda, although the way he represented us carried over into the values he nurtured here: authenticity, integrity and passion,” wrote Bethesda. “His contributions have been integral in building Bethesda and its family of studios into the world-class organization that it is today…We’ll miss you Pete.”
Hines’ retirement follows the recent approval of Microsoft’s acquisition deal with Activision Blizzard. Currently, Bethesda has yet to announce a replacement for Hines’ position.
