After teasing additional content for Persona 5 for several months, Atlus revealed the first official teaser for Persona 5: The Royal at the end of March. Today, more details were made available on what to expect with this update to the JRPG, as well as a guarantee that the title will made it stateside.
The Persona 5: The Royal trailer is only available in Japanese. Twitter user MysticDistance has been hard at work translating segments of the announcement for English audiences.
Persona 5: The Royal will be a new version of the game. This will add a third term to the school calendar, presumably with several more hours of gameplay, and will introduce a variety of new features including new Phantom Thief Kasumi Yoshizawa, a new school counselor at Shujin Academy named Takuto Maruki, and a new location called Kichijoji. The trailer also appears to show a human form for Morgana.
Atlus’s official P5R website has been updated with more information and dizzying number of screenshots showing off what’s new for The Royal. Japanese game news site Gematsu shared these screenshots with English captions, to help English speaking fans get some context on what’s next for the Persona series. It looks like there will be “new strong enemies” and more items in addition to a photo-taking system, date spots, and holidays in the update to Persona 5.
Persona 5: The Royal will be optimized for the PlayStation 4 Pro, with graphics upgraded to a 4K resolution. This version will also feature several quality of life enhancements like the new “Status Assist” as well as other improvements to confidant and stats menus.
Atlus plans to release more information for Persona 5: The Royal on May 9th. In the meantime, Persona 5’s protagonist character Joker recently joined the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, and there are rumors that suggest port of Persona 5 is making its way to the Nintendo Switch sometime soon. Additionally, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinthis coming to the Switch on June 4th.
The game is set to release in Japan on October 31, 2019 and will come to Western markets sometime in 2020.
