Recently, new information has been revealed about the upcoming role playing game, Persona 5: Royal. Initially the trailers announced that it would come to Japan on October 31st 2019, and would release in the United States sometime in 2020. However, at an Atlus Art Show in LA, a trailer that placed the release for Persona 5: Royal for the West sometime in the Spring of 2020.
For those who don’t know anything about the Persona series, it is an offshoot series of the ever popular Shin Megami Tensei series. Within the Persona series, the protagonist gains the power of an arcana card that represents their true personality, their Persona by meeting with a long-nosed man named Igor and his associates in a metaphysical location known as the Velvet Room. The protagonist meets up with and befriends several other people who either already hold the power Persona or acquire it through meeting the protagonist.
Persona 5: Royal retells the story of the protagonist from Persona 5 with some fun twists, and additions. The new game adds some colorful new mechanics to combat such as Show Time attacks, in which two characters work together to destroy the enemy shadows in a fantastic display of camaraderie. Another mechanic that will be updated is the baton pass mechanic. Initially, in Persona 5, the baton pass allowed players to pass their turn onto another character with an added stat boost, however, in Persona 5: Royal, when the player uses the baton pass mechanic, the character who you pass the baton to can attack without spending any SP or HP, and they regain some of their HP as well.
Additionally, the character trailers have revealed that certain characters will have new Ultimate Personas. Currently, the only characters that have been shown to have new Personas are Ryuji, Futaba, and Morgana. It is currently unknown if these are the only characters who will receive new Ultimate Personas. Persona 5: Royal is set to release in the West in Spring 2020 for the Playstation 4.
