Pathologic Turns to Kickstarter for Reboot

Developers Ice Pick Lodge are hoping that Kickstarter can help them bring their plague survival game Pathologic to a brand-new audience with a fresh reboot.

Life can be tough even without the influence of disease, but when a plague ravages an unnamed village far removed from modern society, things go from tough to desperate as you try to find a cure… before it’s too late.

In Pathologic players take on the role of one of three would-be heroes as they try to find the cure and cause of the mysterious plague. You have only 12 days to do so before it’s too late… though even that may be too generous an estimate.

Upon its initial release in 2005 Pathologic received a strange mixture of reviews. Those who enjoyed it promoted it for its atypical storytelling and gameplay while others tore it down due in no small part to poor translation from the game’s native Russian and amateur programming. Now Ice Pick Lodge, the team behind the original, are looking to put nearly ten years’ additional experience to use and bring players the game they had always invisioned: a survival horror experience like no other.

“Original [sic] Pathologic was produced by an unexperienced team that learned a lot by trial and error in the process,” says Ice Pick Lodge. “Lots of details and ideas were abandoned in the process. Now we have the experience and the skills needed to make Pathologic work as is should have worked from the start. New Pathologic will have modern graphics; the script will be extended and reworked. There’ll be an advanced AI in the game, and the mechanics will be thought through much better.”

The team certainly has gained more experience since their first attempt at Pathologic. With three more major (for an indie studio) releases under their belts since the original Pathologic’s mixed-bag release, the team has had a lot of time to grow as designers. With the help of Kickstarter, they are hoping they can bring their initial vision of terror and hopelessness to life in a way they never could before.

They also have a delightfully b-grade hook video for the project:

If the team’s Kickstarter is successful they hope to bring the revamped and re-imagined Pathologic to not only the PC, but Mac, Linux, and even the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Do you have the courage to brave the infested lands and find the cure?
