Rhythm games and combat is a rare combination, but the Patapon games have always perfectly in their element letting the little Patapon fight to the beat. With the release of the well-received remaster of the first two games, Patapon 1+2 Replay, earlier this year, the series entered the minds of fans once again. It seems that it will not be leaving any time soon, either. Earlier today, Bandai Namco announced the new Boss Rush Challenge mode available for both games in the latest update.
The majority of the information players have regarding the new update comes from the Bandai Namco website. As the name suggests, the new mode will allow players to construct armies of Patapon from cleared save files to fight boss after boss until a stage is cleared. The bosses are randomized with each encounter, sometimes even changing difficulty between stages in order to vary the challenge.
In the update trailer featuring the mode, the challenge is presented as the “ultimate high-difficulty mission” for the Patapon and their deity to overcome, building up to the final battle. Luckily, players will have access to special tools the make the challenge doable. The first and most important feature is that Patapon will recover HP between each battle in a given stage. Those that fall will be unavailable for the rest of the stage, encouraging using the reserve well to protect the Patapon. After each stage, players will be able to save and return to that point following a game over, letting them proceed with the main game and train up their army to face harder stages.
The Patapon games are experiencing a resurgence with the release of the latest title. Many fans are now requesting a remaster similar to Patapon 1+2 Replay for the third game in the series. The new boss rush challenge will give those fans a new way to play the game and insurance that the series is not finished yet.
